Scorsese’s “Boardwalk Empire” Gets a Series Order from HBO
by Honk Mahfah on Sep.02, 2009, under Television
According to the Hollywood Reporter, HBO has ordered a new series: Boardwalk Empire, a period drama set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City.
The pilot episode was directed by Martin Scorsese and stars Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson, a politician with mob ties.
The series will co-star, amongst others, Kelly MacDonald, Michael Pitt, and Dabney Coleman.

Based on the book by Nelson Johnson, the series is expected to debut sometime during 2010.
HBO has a number of intriguing projects officially in the pipeline. In addition to Boardwalk Empire, they have a series from David “The Wire” Simon, Treme (set in post-Katrina New Orleans), a history-of-Hollywood miniseries from David “The Sopranos” Chase, the Spielberg/Hanks WWII miniseries The Pacific, and a soon-to-film pilot based on the fantasy novel series A Game of Thrones (starring Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage, and, as THR reported today, Lena Headey).

“True Blood” Renewed for a Third Season
by Honk Mahfah on Jul.30, 2009, under Television
Various news sources are reporting that HBO has officially renewed True Blood for a third season. The move by the network comes as no surprise, seeing as how the series has developed into a smash hit during its second season.
Also renewed: Hung (which has — possibly thanks to the lead-in from True Blood — also been pulling in large numbers of viewers) and Entourage.
No official word yet on whether a second season will be ordered for The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, but HBO has reportedly not ruled out the possibility.

HBO Picks Up “Treme”
by Honk Mahfah on May.07, 2009, under Television
According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO has ordered Treme to series. The series — which focuses on post-Katrina New Orleans — is from producer/writer David Simon, whose previous triumphs for the pay channel include The Wire and Generation Kill.
“This is not a Wire redo with a New Orleans soundtrack,” Simon said. “It’s more of a character study looking at people trying to reconstruct their lives after their city has been destroyed and at a city that [is] a living, breathing organism.”
An air date has not yet been announced.
