Kings Island’s Halloween Haunt event kicked off over the weekend and they quickly received complaints over some displays that many considered offensive. The displays featured dead celebrity skeletons, including Heath Ledger (with empty pill bottles at his feet), Billy Mays, Michael Jackson (with pet monkey Bubbles), and probably most disturbing, NFL quarter back Steven McNair (with his girlfriend who killed him). A local Cincinnati news station posted their photos here.

I just don’t see how someone comes up with the idea, and gets it approved from the higher ups in the theme park to go ahead with it. I’m sure they were just trying to be edgy this year and make some extra news coverage (nothing helps get attention like controversy) but I think they definitely stepped over the line with the McNair display.

The LA Times is reporting that Knott’s Berry Farm will have a scare zone themed to the upcoming film Zombieland, for their Halloween Haunt 2009 event. According to the article, the horror comedy film shot a few scenes at Wild Adventures – a park in Valdosta, Georgia. I’ve been to that park, so I’m looking forward to the movie even more. Unfortunately I can’t make a trip out to Knott’s Berry Farm just for Halloween this year.

You can read the full article at the LA Times here, although the article has more information about the film than the scare zone.

Knott’s Halloween Haunt runs from September 24th to October 31st. Zombieland opens in theaters October 9th.

This is possibly the biggest coaster news story for 2010. Updates have been coming out surprisingly fast, so I’ll give a quick recap.

The news that Kings Dominion would be building a new coaster for 2010 came out late in April when permits by the local government made their way into the news. The pages only mentioned the expansion of a coaster without much details. Kings Dominion made no no comments about it. Then in May orange land markers were spotted behind the coasters Anaconda and Rebel Yell.

In early June a truckload of yellow support columns were unloaded near the pakr and quickly become the hot subject in the coaster community. There was a lot of speculation about the coaster designer among fan sites. The unusal shape of the square support columns kept people guessing – Intamin’s new 2009 coaster “iSpeed” (at Mirabilandia in Italy) does feature the new square supports, instead of the traditional round shape. Considering that the park just removed Hypersonic XLC (much to my chagrin) it looked very possible that it will be another launched coaster. In the last 7 years Intamin has built just over a dozen launched coasters – or as they call them “accelerator” coasters.

Then in the middle of June to everyone’s surprise, the support pieces were loaded back on to trucks and hauled off. Within a week, trucks were back and unloading new red track that featured a unique double spine. Screamscape (theme park news and rumors site) then reported it had sources claiming the track “is in fact a new track design from Intamin, which was first spotted a few months ago being installed over in Abu Dhabi at the Ferrari World park. In the case of Ferrarri World, the track was being used for a coaster promised to be a contender for the coaster world speed record, but no exact details have been given.”

unique double spine track

With all this information it looked most likely that Kings Dominion would be building a new launched coaster for 2010. Then more gasoline was thrown on the coaster news fire when a member of a roller coaster message board posted a picture of an Intamin shipping label with the words “Giga Coaster”.

Currently there is only one Intamin coaster in the world classified as a giga-coaster: Millennium Force at Cedar Point.

side bar: A giga-coaster is generally considered to be a full circuit roller coaster with a drop between 300 – 399 feet (the term mega-coaster is used for coasters between 200-299 feet, and strata-coaster is 400-499).

Over the last couple weeks pictures have been coming out of lots of different track pieces as well as new land cleared and even footers for support columns. One picture shows a clear sign that it will use a cable lift system just like Millennium Force. While some people say that the track could be for a cable launch system.

If you look carefully you can see “L05″ written on the right side track rail. Of course L could stand for Lift or Launch. Whether it is a launch or a lift hill, it seems 99% certain this will be an Intamin coaster towering between 300-399 feet. I think Kings Dominion will take it’s time and let the buzz keep building before they make any announcements.

Kings Island officially opened their latest roller coaster earlier this summer, Diamondback. The park’s newest roller coaster fills a major void in their ride arsenal, a hyper coaster – a steel coaster usually over 200′ tall that focuses on speed, drops, and airtime, without any inverting elements (no need for an oppressive over-the-shoulder restraint , hyper coasters require only a lap bar).

“The park has really deserved a coaster like this,” said Dave Altman, vice president of the American Coaster Enthusiasts – which roughly translates to “It’s about time they built a coaster worth a damn, and not some mediocre turd, like half the coasters here.”
…at least that’s how I interpret it. Kings Island has never had a reputation for having standout rides. Most of the parks coasters are known for being a little rough and uncomfortable. Diamondback will be different from their other coasters for one main reason: Bolliger and Mabillard. Referred to as B&M for short, the Swiss based roller coaster designers are known for some of the most smooth and comfortable coasters in the world – and this is the first B&M coaster for the park. Diamondback is B&M’s 9th hyper coaster design.

Many of the reviews from coaster connoisseur already say this is definitely a contender for a Golden Ticket Award(Golden Ticket Awards are given out every year by Amusement Today – a theme park industry monthly periodical). Three of the B&M’s 8 hyper coasters consistently win golden ticket awards (Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, Apollo’s Charriot at Bush Gardens Europe in Virginia, and Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia).

The $22 million ride is Kings Island’s 14th roller coaster. In terms of most coasters at a single park, the addition of Diamondback ranks Kings Island #4 in the world – behind Cedar Point (with 17 coasters), Six Flags Magic Mountain (16), Canada’s Wonderland (15). It pulls it ahead of the parks that are currently tied with 13 coasters – Six Flags Great Adventure, Six Flags Over Texas, and Kings Dominion (and for those interested, Six Flags Great America and Carowinds follow with 12 coasters). It’s worth mentioning that nearly all those parks already have their own hyper coaster.

Here are the specs
* Height: 230 feet
* First drop: 215 feet
* First drop angle: 74 degrees
* Other drops: 193 feet, 131 feet, 129 feet, 110 feet, 106 feet
* Top speed: 80 mph
* Track length: 5318 feet
* Ride time: 3:00 minutes

If you don’t want to wait until your next trip to Ohio, here is some video.
