I can’t think of a clever line to describe the absolutely insane amount of killing and blood and boobz there are in this game.

Wait. Never mind.

Ok. First off, this review may or may not get on your nerves a little. I played the first GOW for an hour or so, and never touched the second one. So if i am excited about things that aren’t new to the game or the engine, then you can just fudge off.

This game establishes its scale and depth right from the start. Kratos is riding on the back of a titan, both aiming to climb Mt. Olympus and take out Zeus. Super epic already. And it just grows from there. The first thing you’re going to notice is all the blood and gore in all its HD glory. The environments are HUGE and really do help set the mood and tone for your constant rampage and inability to talk with an inside voice. Add in a few “celebrity” voice actors and you’ve got a game that’s would hold your attention even without all that blood.

Enough with the looky looky, lets get to the main course. Its pretty much a hack and slash. There isn’t really anything new as far as the engine goes. You’re still doing the same killing and button mashing mini games that you’ve always done. That doesn’t, however, take away from the game at all. Its good to have a game that doesn’t try to overwhelm you with bells and whistles, especially when most of those bells and whistles weren’t needed and would probably just piss you off. This game is also somewhat lopsided on the balance between platforming and the killing, but not in bad way. They start you out with a nice blend between the two, but then eventually work in to giving you a niiiice solid chunk of killing, and then switching it back to platforming, rinse and repeat. Its actually a welcomed break from the norm. And when it does work in to giving you segments like this, the scale is kicked in to overdrive. Some of the environments you have to platform your way thru are even more insanely huge than the normal ones, and the killing segments will almost overwhelm you with the waves and waves of enemies that let you spin those chain knives like a madman. Boss fights are just as crazy and bloody as you veterans probably remember, and that you new guys are expecting from this series. Blood flowing, heads rolling, boobz, organs splashing out, eyeballs being ripped, boobz, faces collapsing, ripping people apart, smashing heads against walls, and boobz. All that great stuff.

I couldn’t really find any gripes with this game. It was longer than I  expected it to be, and thru the course of the entire thing, i only saw one glitch, and I’m not sure that it was even game related. The two baby annoyances i did find were: 1) you cant skip the cinematic cut scenes, and 2) there is a button combo that makes you switch weapons quickly that is a combination of buttons that are already used extremely frequently. There were several handfulls of moments where weapons switched accidentally using that method. It was super annoying because it already only took a tap on the dpad to switch the weapons, why would you need yet another way thats crowded in to the controls like that? So there you go.

In the grand scheme of things, God of War III is a rock solid game that wont let any of the fans of the series down. Great story, great looking, great play. This is definitely a game that will sell some PS3s all by itself.

God of War III – PS3 – 9.8 / 10
