Wolfwood Rantz : on romantic comedies

by Jerimiah Wolfwood on Aug.27, 2009, under Movies

Just an old fashion ranting running away with me.

This last weekend I went to the movies with a group of friends to see Post Grad.  After leaving, one of my friends complained that it was too predictable.

I responded by telling her that it was a romantic comedy, otherwise known as, the most predictable film genre this side of the action film.

I mean really 65% of Rom-Com’s are

  • step 1 boy meets girl
  • step 2 boy falls in love with girl
  • step 3 boy loses girl
  • step 4 boy gets girl back, and finally
  • step 5 happily ever after

I would like to state the fact that this is a genre I am a fan of.

Movies such as Dan in Real Life, Music and Lyrics, and Intolerable Cruelty are some good times.

But who are we kidding?  We all knew how these movies would end the moment we bought our tickets.

Now does this mean I will stop watching,  hell no!  Not when I have things like Date Night, starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey, to look forward to.  But do I kid myself into thinking that the ending will surprise me?  Not really.

As always -  Jerimiah Wolfwood

P.S. I would like to give special mention to the movies Love Actually and Last Chance Harvey though neither of these is really a romantic comedy they are really worth your time.

P.P.S. I ask everyone who reads this please leave a comment with you favorite romantic comedy.

I’d probably choose something classic, like the When Harry Met Sally or The Princess Bride (which although it has plenty of action/adventure in it, is a romantic comedy in my book). But, I would have to say that the best recent romantic comedies (including Love Actually) would be Along Came Polly and 50 First Dates. Both enjoyable, both predictable. Along Came Polly is good, but the climax of the movie actually rips off a plot line from friends. Ross once made a pros & cons list of Rachel, just like Ben Stillers character puts Annistons character in the “risk master”. 50 First Dates is pretty original, but it does have the inexplicable Adam Sandler movie trademark of having Rob Schneider in it.

My favorite romantic comedy is “Deliverance.”
